Put it in a weed whacker and trim the grass on a chain link fence.

Spoken like a guy who knows. I wasn't troubled by chain link (it ate the cord but the job got done) as much as by the PVC white picket fence. (The slat gaps of a few inches, too small for the trimmer head to fit & it ate string so fast.) It was my nemesis for a few years.... drove me nuts.
