I would suggest Lubuntu, Xubuntu, or Linux Mint XFCE. These three distributions run better on older (and newer) hardware, and work more like Windows.
I've been using Linux since 1997, and I'm currently using Xubuntu on my desktop and Peppermint on my laptop.
Interesting and thanks for sharing. After my years at Apple I still have a fleet of machines that I use to my wife's chagrin. They still are solid and do simple tasks from file storage to serving on charity work for cancer research etc. And on another note, while I worked at Apple I was always amazed on how long customers would keep machines working on production environments. I often had customers that would have machines that were 10+ years old still running just fine.
