Why is it any of our business where someone is in their spiritual journey? Simply so we can feel better that we are "more Christian" than someone else? That's being a Pharisee.

      I think you're misrepresenting what the man said. The author is a pastor, whose job it is to help people on the journey you mention. That's what makes it his business. He can't do a whole lot to help a person to progress if he doesn't have any way to assess where they currently are and where they're headed.
