I think most people understand that Facebook's (and their counterparts) business model is to give away free stuff in exchange for selling our attention in terms of advertising.
What's interesting to me is that the author of the book in question ties in that this isn't a new concept, and has been a pillar of advertising for a long time. Anyway, thought it was an interesting read.
